How to Clear a Tarot Deck

How to Clear a Tarot Deck
Congratulations on your new tarot deck. It’s no easy task to choose from the many beautiful tarot decks out there. Before you take the cards out of the box, it’s a good idea to clear the deck of any negative energy as well as imparting your own energy onto the new deck.

Clearing Your Tarot Deck

There are multiple ways to clear a tarot deck. Many tarot readers will also cleanse their reading space, table, and any objects used to read with. This is to remove any negativity from the area as well as the deck. When you clear your tarot cards, you also remove traces of energy blocks so you can use them to the best of your abilities with clean and positive energy.

Tarot Card Success

Professional readers with many clients will commonly do spiritual preparations like clearing the space and cards of negativity after each reading in addition to their initial clearing. For your personal deck, go with how you feel and what gives you the best energy.

Also, by keeping cards and space energetically cleansed it helps eliminate false and inaccurate readings. You won’t have leftover energy from the previous readings this way. Clearing the cards and the area is like blowing fresh air on them.

While some people can read without cleansing a deck, most people want to put their energy into the deck instead of just taking them out of the box and starting. As you use the deck, you are charging it with your energy and pushing out any other influences on the cards. Clearing the deck also blesses it with your own spiritual energy.

Most people begin a clearing of the cards and the space they are going to use by invoking good energy to assist them. They ask the good energy to clear the tarot deck and space; and also ask the good energy to give the deck and space a positive charge.

Good energy can take the form of what you perceive as good energy whether it be a spirit guide, a departed ancestor, white light, whatever suits you. The point is to use whatever you feel is a good and positive force to clear any negativity or blocks from the cards and space.

Blessing Tarot Decks

It’s also a good practice to consecrate your cards to the use of good when you clear your space and tarot deck.

When we consecrate something, we make it holy to ourselves be it a person, place, or thing. Your intention is very important when performing clearing and cleansing.

You want to have a clear head and heart free from any negative intent or thought when you do this. Sincerity is the first element that’s required to be of pure heart and mind. You’ll also want to thank all those energies that are helping in the cleansing also.

Here is a simple invocation to clear the deck or space to start. When using it for your space just substitute the word ‘space’ for ‘deck’.

“I consecrate this deck to bring Light where there is Darkness,

I consecrate this deck for guidance and wisdom for myself and others for the higher good for all concerned,

I consecrate this deck to enlighten myself and those concerned,

May all who use and touch this deck know the love of Spirit and be drawn into the light of Spirit,

I dedicate this deck to serve others with spiritual growth, for wisdom, knowledge, and to bring peace to all those who seek its wisdom,

I dedicate this deck to the development of my intuition so that I may be a source of guidance to others.”

Of course, you may write your own or add any words you wish to fit your energy as well as your feelings. This is a non-denominational invocation for universal positive energy.

There are two main ways people proceed while invoking the positive energy of the universe to their decks and spaces. You can shuffle the cards while saying the invocation or put the cards in numerical order before saying the invocation. Do what you prefer.

You may decide to do neither and just place your hands on the cards or place the deck of cards against your heart. There are a myriad of ways to bless tarot cards. You don’t have to use the invocation I wrote above–that’s just a suggestion. Any prayer that has meaning to you is suitable. A mantra will work if your intention is clear and positive. The whole point is to put your cards in touch with a higher good.

Smudging Rituals

You can then go on to use incense or a smudge stick—your choice—to clear the air and the cards. Just pass the cards through the smoke. Some readers put a few drops of oil like lavender on the cards.

Another alternative is to sprinkle the cards with salt. Other options include rapping the cards hard against the table or flinging them across the room to rid them of negativity. It’s about what works for you and your beliefs.

At this point, the deck can be wrapped in a silk cloth or put in a box especially just for the cards. People have been known to sleep with their cards under their pillows or put a crystal on the deck to keep it charged and cleared when they are not in use. I keep mine in a wooden box I purchased specifically for the purpose.

All these ideas are just pointers to help you get the most from your tarot deck. You’re free to come up with your own rituals to make the deck yours.
